ON! Handcrafted Digital Playgrounds
Play will be to the 21st century what work was to the last 300 years of industrial society–our dominant way of knowing, doing and creating value. -Pat Kane

ON! Handcrafted Digital Playgrounds is an exciting, interactive exhibition celebrating our intuitive attraction to play. ON! transforms the CAC galleries into a collection of playgrounds where creativity is limitless and experimentation is the norm. The exhibition features installations from some of the most creative minds breaking ground today–artists who are sought after by the entertainment industry, Silicon Valley and museums alike:
These artists personify the new reality of creative production today: genre-bending, creative ingenuity at its most fun. From hi-tech to analog, these artists use code and circuitry as adeptly as paper, ink and canvas. Their interactive installations, games, drawings and toys all engage the visitors’ imagination and encourage participation. Together they form a new kind of museum experience where the visitor is player, tinkerer, maker and collaborator. These are playgrounds, after all–so game on. This is the new recess. Now let’s play!
The exhibition has its own website onplaygrounds.org where posts from twitter and instagram with the hashtag #onplaygrounds gets aggregated in real time. The website also features an online component to the show, an interactive piece called New Consequences. See description below:
New Consequences is a web-based experiment in a similar vein to the Surrealist game 'Exquisite Corpse'.
Each participant uploads an image to the site which is then 'assembled' with the 2 previous participants
composite operation 'lighter', causing the 3 images to overlap and add their color values. New Consequences
is developed by Cameron Brand / 3st and Jeremiah Chiu / Plural for the ON! Handcrafted Digital Playgrounds
exhibition on view at the Contemporary Arts Center March 9 – September, 2013.
ON! is an exhibition conceived, curated and launched to coincide with OFFF Cincinnati--an annual event that brings artists and designers from around the world to share their work and inspiration with the Cincinnati creative community.
