Traditional filmmaking is often bound by the constraints of time and Hollywood formats. However, many filmmakers have created works that push the limits of scale and running times, the long duration an essential strategy to portray the sweep of history or to immerse the viewer deeply into the milieu of the film. Most of these films have rarely been screened for the public. Their duration, often extending over 6 hours, makes it a difficult fit even for art house cinema. Typically, the films are screened once or twice in a venue on a “marathon” basis. The Performance Space of the CAC offers a unique opportunity to run these films continuously over the course of several days, and, in a sense, will become another gallery in the museum. Any visitor, on any day, could drop by the space and sink into a part of some reality unfolding that week. Viewers who get engaged in a particular film or who want to experience a work in its entirety have multiple opportunities to return to the museum and to absorb the full length of the work. Screenings will be free and open to the public during five time periods in the coming season. Highlights include complete screenings of Jean-Luc Godard's Histoire(s) du Cinéma (1988-1998), Andy Warhol's Empire (1964), Jonas Mekas' As I Was Moving Ahead, Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty (2000), and the world premiere of Cincinnati-based filmmaker Steve Gebhardt's Zaha Hadid & Her Museum (2000-2006).
