Marilyn Minter: Chewing Color

Season:
2009-2010

October 3, 2009 - May 2, 2010

(MidPoint Music Festival preview September 24-October 2)

An already established and celebrated artist, Chewing Color presents a unique lens on the artist’s work.  This solo exhibition of recent paintings and photographs features the hyper-realistic work for which she is so well known, in thoughtful dialogue with the more abstract work she creates. Minter's luminous enamel paintings and lush color photographs reveal the sometimes flawed side of glamour.  Saturated, slick and glossy, her work focuses sharply on a detail or moment of imperfection.  It is the combination of technique, perspective, use of color and finishes, and the directness with which she treats her subject which provides such a fresh take on the topic of female beauty and empowerment.  Included in the show is the museum debut of Green Pink Caviar, the video that has gained fame playing on the MTV HD billboard in Times Square and, most recently, accompanying Madonna on her current European tour.  For the video, Minter directed her models to lick brightly colored candy on a sheet of glass and then videotaped and photographed them from the other side.  This concept of painting with the body mimics Minter’s own technique of finishing her pieces’ highly glossy surfaces with her fingers.

Minter was born in 1948 in Shreveport, Louisiana, but lives and works in New York.  She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Florida in 1970 and a Master of Fine Art from Syracuse University in 1972.  Recent exhibitions include the 2006 Whitney Biennial, SITE Santa Fe, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and a solo exhibition at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
